Exploring trade-offs between landscape impact, land use and resource quality for onshore variable renewable energy: an application to Great Britain

چکیده

The ambitious Net Zero aspirations of Great Britain (GB) require massive and rapid developments Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) technologies. GB possesses substantial resources for these technologies, but questions remain about which VRE should be exploited where. This study develops a transferable methodology to explore the trade-offs between landscape impact, land use competition resource quality onshore wind as well ground- roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) systems first time across GB. These constrain technical economic potentials technologies at Local Authority level. Our approach combines techno-economic geospatial analyses with crowd-sourced ‘scenicness’ data quantify aesthetics. Despite strong correlations scenicness planning application outcomes wind, no such relationship exists ground-mounted PV. innovative method rooftop-PV assessment bottom-up analysis four cities top-down national results show large that are strongly constrained by both aspects. equates 1324 TWh 153 rooftop PV 1200–7093 PV, depending on scenario. We conclude five recommendations focus around aligning energy policies multiple scales governance arenas.

Trade-Offs in Multi-Purpose Land Use under Land Degradation

Land provides a host of ecosystem services, of which the provisioning services are often considered paramount. As the demand for agricultural products multiplies, other ecosystem services are being degraded or lost entirely. Finding a sustainable trade-off between food production and one or more of other ecosystem services, given the variety of stakeholders, is a matter of optimizing land use i...

Using Optimal Land-Use Scenarios to Assess Trade-Offs between Conservation, Development, and Social Values

Development of land resources can contribute to increased economic productivity but can also negatively affect the extent and condition of native vegetation, jeopardize the persistence of native species, reduce water quality, and erode ecosystem services. Spatial planning must therefore balance outcomes for conservation, development, and social goals. One approach to evaluating these trade-offs...

Analytical solutions to trade-offs between size of protected areas and land-use intensity.

Land-use change is affecting Earth's capacity to support both wild species and a growing human population. The question is how best to manage landscapes for both species conservation and economic output. If large areas are protected to conserve species richness, then the unprotected areas must be used more intensively. Likewise, low-intensity use leaves less area protected but may allow wild sp...

construction and validation of translation metacognitive strategy questionnaire and its application to translation quality

like any other learning activity, translation is a problem solving activity which involves executing parallel cognitive processes. the ability to think about these higher processes, plan, organize, monitor and evaluate the most influential executive cognitive processes is what flavell (1975) called “metacognition” which encompasses raising awareness of mental processes as well as using effectiv...

Combining predictors to achieve optimal trade-offs between selection quality and adverse impact.

The authors propose a procedure to determine (a) predictor composites that result in a Pareto-optimal trade-off between the often competing goals in personnel selection of quality and adverse impact and (b) the relative importance of the quality and impact objectives that correspond to each of these trade-offs. They also investigated whether the obtained Pareto-optimal composites continue to pe...
